Preserved from mass tourism, the island of Sainte-Marie offers beautiful beaches, coves, luxuriant vegetation such as fields of vanilla, cloves, cinnamon, mangroves and orchids. It’s an Ideal spot for scuba diving. You can visit historic sites such as the Pirates’ Graveyard, Île aux Forbans (Pirate Island) and Îlot Madame. You must take a walk through the filao trees on the Île aux Nattes (Mat Island).
It is surrounded by fine white sandy beaches, ideal for lazy days. You can’t resist a swim in the amazingly clear emerald waters of the lagoon. Sainte-Marie Island is a paradise for humpback whales, the main tourist attraction from July to September. Whales breed in Antongil Bay and the strait between Sainte-Marie and the mainland.
